Ice on Whyte Festival

A reason to love winter in the city...ICE FESTIVALS! This one is called Ice on Whyte (avenue that is.) It is an amazing little set up/competition of ice carvers from around the world. A few were there from Calgary, and Russia, and even New Zealand! Pretty cool. There is also an Ice Slide, a castle, and an ice maze. Too cool. We headed down one early evening to take a look. When we got there, it was light, so the pictures of the sculptures aren't that great...sorry. If you want to see night pictures, go to Kamry's blog (J+K Low--on the sidebar of my blog). They went the next night when all of the carvings were finished and it was dark. I wish we could go again to see them all completed, but it was so cool being there when some of the carvers were working on theirs.
Here are Zach and I posing on the Ice Bridge. It had little ice gargoyles carved on each post. It reminded me of Beauty and the Beast, North Pole style.

So Intricate! Some kind of dragon or something on a branch?? I don't know, but it was cool!

Dolphins! It was funny because I told Zach we were going to see the ice dolphins so he'd get excited. I had no clue they'd be there, but just figured that's what people carve. :) I'm glad they didn't make a liar out of me! :)

You can't tell, but this one was SWEET! It was of coral and fish and sea weed. There was SO MUCH DETAIL! The carvers had JUST finished this one, so I talked to them a bit. They started as wood carvers. Pretty cool.

This was the one done by the New Zealand artist. Can you tell?? Not really because my picture stinks. It is a Tiki Man in front of a surf board. Liked it!

Here is the Tiki Man with a few details...Pretty cool. See what all these people up here dream of during winter...surfing, islands, tropical fish, water, dolphins...WARMTH!

I don't know what this is...

This was Zach's favorite! Melman! The finished product was awesome. I love how they did the contrast with the spots.

And this was Pegasus I think Pretty amazing.

Here was one that Richard took for me. My battery died at the end of our night...or else I would have gone around and took better pictures of them all!! Probably a good thing it was dead...
Isn't this horse AMAZING!?

Zach trying to be tall enough to go on the ice slide. Too bad. They had a kids one being carved, but the carver was too busy working on his contest entry. It would be done in 3 days. Sad for Zach. He wanted to go so bad. I almost want to go back, just so he can go on the ice slide.

Here's us on the slide! FUN!

Zach entering the ice castle.

Us Canadians in our Igloo.

Zach was so funny. I told him to get on the bed for a picture. He just got on...and IN the bed. All snuggled up. This is a picture to zoom in on his face if you can. He is so happy!

Me and the "fireplace" in the castle.

Zach modeling the table and chairs.

Zach on the bench.

Justin and the girls with the awesome castle.

The crew (we went with Leslie and Richard) warming up in the not so warm "Warm Tent." We got some very HOT cocoa though. Yum yum.

Angie, I think she looks like you here.

Kate being Kate.

The last...and most popular stop of the night. ZACH LOVED THIS!!! It was so hard to chase him through the 3 foot high doors.

They froze lights and toys into the maze. Cool.
Oh so happy! This picture won't rotate. Sorry

Justin trying to chase Zach out.

Oooooooo...

All you Edmontonians...this goes on until the 24th and is only $2. It could be the 24th now I guess...I don't know... :)
